There isn’t a specific requirement for fire rating to ground floors provided that there isn’t a basement below. In the case where a basement exists it is necessary to clarify the requirements with the local authority building control inspector in the context of the fire provision in the particular building.
Intermediate Upper Floors – Same Occupancy
These floors are deemed to require a minimum fire rating of ½ hr, we would recommend a beam and dense concrete block in these situations.
This dense construction will achieve better fire, acoustic and thermal mass qualities.
Separating Upper Floors - Between different Occupancy
These floors are deemed to require a minimum 1hr fire rating and this is often achieved in conjunction with the ceiling. We recommend an enhanced detailing and robust solution in this case.
